In Gwalior Riyasat the first regular court was established in 1844 at lashkar by Deorao Mama Saheb who was minister to Maharaj Jayajirao. On the constitution of State of Madhya Bharat the Madhya Bharat High court was established in 1948. The District & Session Judge was the head of the judicial administration in the district of Gwalior & later his powers extended till revenue district Shivpuri. After reconstitution of States & establish of Madhya Pradesh State, the High Court shifted to Jabalpur but a bench of the High court functioned in Gwalior. In 1961 the jurisdiction of the District & Session Judge further extended till Datia; for his assistance in Judicial Administration, 5 Additional District & Session Judges were appointed of which 3 exercised powers in Gwalior & one each at Datia & Shivpuri.
